Luuk van Middelaar is a professor of EU Law at Leiden University and a leading commentator on European affairs. He is the author of The Passage to Europe (Yale UP 2013) and most recently of Alarums and Excursions: improving politics on the European stage (Agenda Publishing 2019). Luuk has been published by the Financial Times, the New Statesman, Le Monde, Die Zeit and my other newspapers across Europe and in academic journals such as the European Constitutional Law Review and the Common Market Law Review. Trained as historian and political theorist in the Netherlands and in Paris, he served among others as the speechwriter to the first president of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy (2010-2014). He is a member of the Dutch Advisory Council on International Affairs, chairing its EU committee.
